  • Seismological signals acquired at Soultz-sous-Forêts during the 1993 stimulation. The downhole seismological network consisted of 3 accelerometers (4 components sensors) built by the CSMA (station: 4550,4601 and 4616) and one hydrophone (Station: EPS1) The records are done on a temporal window of 2s with a sample frequency of 5064Hz and a flat response up to 1000Hz. The anti-aliasing low-pass filter of Bessel (1500Hz) has been applied. The validation of data is done thanks to the 4-C sensors. The associated catalogue is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS1993-catalogue). The description of the downhole network is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS1993-network).

  • After the deepening of well GPK1 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-GPK1) to 3590m in 1992, an extensive stimulation program was performed in September and October 1993. GPK1 was stimulated with large scale hydraulic injections to investigate the behavior and the extension of large natural fractures detected previously. A total of 44000 m3 of water was injected during the two major stimulation tests. About 18700 microseismic events were detected during the stimulation program by the downhole and the surface network. • The surface network was installed by EOST, University of Strasbourg, and contained different types of seismological stations. Three of them were permanent stations, belonging to the ReNaSS (French National Seismic Network) and designed to monitor the local, natural seismicity. One broad-band sensor (Güralp type) was also permanently installed at Soultz-sous-Forêts. In addition, fourteen temporary stations were set up during the stimulation test. Eight were continuously recording, telemetered, 1 Hz, single vertical seismometers. Five were autonomous three-component seismometers recording by triggering. Finally one three-component station (CARO) was also continuously recording (Cuenot et al., 2008, Analysis of the Microseismicity Induced by Fluid Injections at the EGS Site of Soultz-sous-Forêts (Alsace, France): Implications for the Characterization of the Geothermal Reservoir Properties). The temporary stations of the surface network were removed on the 11th of July, five days after the shut-in of the GPK2 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-GPK2) well. Unfortunately, several seismic events occurred after that date and were then only recorded by the permanent surface network. The coordinates of the stations have been obtained from RESIF (https://www.resif.fr) and from the Ph. D. of N. Cuenot (Réponse du granite fracturé de Soultz-sous-Forêts à des injections massives de fluide : Analyse de la microsismicité induite et du régime de contraintes). Last update of data: 03/02/2022

Please look at the file "SSFS1993-Hydraulic_october_2.csv" for the correct data of wellhead pressure for October 1993. Last update of data: 10/01/2018

  • The downhole seismological network in 1993 consisted of three accelerometers (4-component sensors) built by the CSMA and one hydrophone. The 4-component sondes were deployed in boreholes 4616 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-4616), 4601 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-4601) and 4550 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-4550) ( at depths of around 1500m within the granite and were grouted in place. The hydrophone was deployed in EPS1 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-EPS1) at a depth of around 2000m (Baria, R. 1996.The European HDR programme 1992-1995). The X,Y,Z coordinates in the file refer to the local coordinate system with the GPK1 wellhead as origin: X: Easting in meters from GPK1 wellhead (toward UTM32 East) Y: Northing in meters from GPK1 wellhead (toward UTM32 North) Z: Depth in meters from GPK1 wellhead The local coordinate system is based on the UTM32 system. The coordinates of the stations in the local coordinate system have been obtained from the report R 39025 of the BRGM by Hulot et al., 1996 (Testing the hodogram method on the 1993 Soultz microseismic data). The latitude, longitude and elevation in the WGS84 coordinate system have been derived from the local coordinate system. The associated catalogue is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS1993-catalogue). The associated waveforms are available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS1993-seed). Last update of data: 24/07/2019

  • Velocity model described in J. Helm thesis (p.127) according to Beauce et al. (1991). The velocity model was used to calculate location of microseismic events from the surface network during 1993 stimulation. The catalogue of events located during 1993 stimulation using the surface network is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS1993-catalogue_Helm). Last update of data: 26/07/2019

  • The surface network during the 1993 episode consisted of 14 stations. Three of them were permanent seismic stations, since removed. Eight of them were temporary 1-component seismometers. The station 1 was moved two times and the station 3 one time during the episode to improve azimuthal coverage. At least, three temporary 3-component seismometers were installed at four different sites. The surface network was installed by EOPGS (Ecole et Observatoire de Physique du Globe de Strasbourg).166 events were detected with the network. The catalogue of seismicity associated is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS1993-catalogue_Helm). Unfortunately the waveforms have not been recovered. Last update of data: 07/03/2018

  • During June/July 2000 a hydraulic stimulation program was conducted in the well GPK2 (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/SSF-GPK2) at the European Hot Dry Rock project, Soultz-sous-Forêts, France. The stimulation was performed over the openhole section of GPK2 from 4431 m measured depth (MD) to the bottom of the well at around 5084 m MD. A total of 27 800 m3 of water were injected. At the start of the stimulation 700 m3 of brine with a density of approximately 1.2 g/cc were injected in an effort to encourage downward growth of the stimulated region. The stimulation covered a period of 6 days. After a break of 7 days a post-fracturing, injection test was performed. Seismic monitoring continued for a further 11 days after the injection test (Dyer, B., 2001.Soultz GPK2 stimulation June/July 2000. Seismic monitoring report.). Dates of the different tests of the 2000 hydraulic program: - Stimulation test at GPK2: from 18:44 30/06/2000 to 16:33 06/07/2000. - Post-stimulation injection test at GPK2: from 10:09 13/07/2000 to 20:25 15/07/2000. The Episode contains several datasets which you can find further down the page in "Links".

  • First catalogue calculated by N. Cuenot as part of his Ph. D. The downhole network and the surface network were both used to locate events of the 2000 episode at Soultz-sous-Forêts. Number of events: 7215. The catalogue contains the preliminary locations of events performed by N. Cuenot with a modified version of the HYPOINVERSE program (Klein, 1978). N. Cuenot calculated a second catalogue with more precise locations using tomographic inversion. The catalogue covers only the stimulation test and not the post-injection test of the 2000 episode. Only the events recorded by at least 8 stations (5 from the surface network and the 3 downhole accelerometers) and with an RMS ≤ 0.02 s were kept in the catalogue. The final mean mathematical location error is about 80 m horizontally and 100 m vertically. Time period: 30/06/2000 19:15:18 - 11/07/2000 05:58:03 (UTC). The data parameters are the following: Column 1: Event number Column 2: Date (UTC) Column 3: Time (UTC) Column 4: Latitude WGS84 Column 5: Longitude WGS84 Column 6: Elevation (m) Column 7: Magnitude determined from the seismic signal duration Column 8: RMS Remark: the signals from the RéNaSS stations and the Güralp sensor of the surface network, and from the two hydrophones of the downhole network were not used to locate the events of the catalogue. The description of the surface network is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS2000-surface_network). The description of the downhole network is available (https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/SSFS2000-downhole_network). Last update of data: 27/02/2018
