Magnetic anomalies
Broader concept
Description
- Local variation of the Earth's magnetic field from the expected value at this location. The expected value can be that determined from main magnetic field models, and magnetic anomalies therefore result from local deposits of remanent magnetic materials in the rocks of the Earth's crust. The magnetic variation in successive bands of seafloor lineations, parallel to ridges, is the founding evidence of seafloor spreading theory, central to plate tectonics.
